2010 COOPER’S CUTLOOSE YORKE’S CLASSIC

27 Years of Surfing Excellence

The prestigious Cooper’s Cutloose  Yorke’s Classic will be held at theSouthern Tip of Yorke Peninsula from October 2nd – 4th ,2010.

On behalf of all of the event sponsor’s and supporterswe would like to welcome you to the 27th Anniversary Cooper’s CutlooseYorke’s Classic.  We wish allcompetitors good luck and thank all locals, spectators, parents and partnersfor their continued support of this prestigious event.

Bringing surfers together for the first YORKE’SCLASSIC was Paul Balcerek and his tireless efforts in running the event for tenyears in conjunction with Surf Culture Australia’s contribution for overfifteen years have helped the event become what it is today.  An event for surfers to challengethemselves in the biggest, best waves available in the three day event window.During the inaugural Yorke’s Classic in 1983 surfing lost one of its wellrespected competitors, Keith Sugars, in a tragic drowning mishap at Richard’sin Pondalowie Bay.  This weekendthe best surfers in South Australia will battle for the coveted Keith SugarsMemorial Trophy.

Continuing on from lour2007 Australian surfing first, this years’ ‘Yorke’s Surfing Classic’ will againset a green benchmark for the sport, by offsetting the greenhouse gas emissionsthat will be generated by the participants. Surf Culture Australia, organisersof the 2010 event have committed to purchasing certified carbon credits tooffset emissions generated from co-ordinating and running the event. Theemissions will come from sources such as travel to and from southern YorkePeninsula for  contest officialsplus all pre event organisation.

The event is held in the pristine environmentsurrounding the Innes National Park, where the truly spectacular naturalscenery is matched by awesome action in the water over the October longweekend.

“As South Australia’spremier surfing event attracting some of Australia’s best surfers it makessense for us to take some leadership on the issue of greenhouse gas emissions. As surfers we travel a lot to pursue our sport and like any travel fossil fuelsare burnt in the process. Our sport really relies on a healthy environment, soto offset our emissions to run an event like the Yorke’s Classic makes perfectsense,” said Mark Orr, event coordinator and owner of Surf Culture Australia.

The Yorke’s SurfingClassic is held on southern Yorke Peninsula between Daly Head and the InnesNational Park. Spring time provides for optimum conditions and swellforecasters will keep an eye on the weather charts from now. They will beeagerly scanning the charts for the arrival of swell conditions similar to thelast three years, which have seen up to 2 - 3 metre waves at the notoriouslydangerous Chinaman’s Reef.

Balance Carbon managingdirector,  Matt Shorten, an avidsurfer himself said “Balance Carbon are really pleased to be able to help theYorke’s Classic and greater surfing community move towards taking greaterresponsibility for our actions. It’s really great to see the Yorke’s Classiclead the charge. While we are privileged in SA to have loads of unspoiltcoastline, we know that a lot of resources can be consumed to get to some ofthese spots. Climate change presents real challenges to our way of life. Assurfers, we know all too well how important a healthy environment is.”

It is tradition now that surfers return tothe pristine beaches of southern Yorke Peninsula each October long weekend forthe YORKE’S CLASSIC.  Over theyears we have seen some unbelievable competition in some of the best waves ourcoastline has to offer.

Again we wish everyone well and look forward to agreat event for surfing in South Australia.  Enjoy the spirit of surfing at Yorke’s.
